Previous Winners:

A distinguished career and a great ambassador for the market
Throughout his long career in private practice, Stuart Popham has had a considerable impact on both Clifford Chance and the profession in general. Having qualified in 1978, he became a partner at CC in 1984 and quickly established himself as one of the finest finance lawyers in the City. As Clifford Chance confirmed its position as one of the leading banking firms in the UK and around the world, Popham took on a number of positions of responsibility. Between 1992 and 1995 he headed the London finance and securities group and then served as global head of the finance practice between 1999 and 2002. In 2003 Popham took over as senior partner and helped oversee a period of considerable progress for the Magic Circle firm.

As head of the UK’s largest firm Popham also became a regular fixture on government delegations overseas, often as the sole representative of the legal profession. His charismatic demeanour made him perfectly suited to the role. He handed over as senior partner to fellow finance specialist Malcolm Sweeting on 1 January 2011 after eight years in the top role having received numerous plaudits from the market.
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Nicholas Green QC
Brick Court Chambers
As the chairman of the Bar Council in 2010, Nicholas Green QC was a vocal advocate for the modernisation of the Bar. His report, ‘The future of the Bar’, won plaudits for its considered view of how barristers should respond to an increasingly competitive marketplace. Few chairs of the Bar Council have had as much of an impact.
Nilufer Von Bismarck
Slaughter and May
A dealmaker in the classic Slaughter and May mould, Nilufer von Bismarck enjoyed an extraordinary run in 2010. High-profile mandates for Prudential, Standard Chartered Bank and Tomkins confirmed her as one of the corporate stars of the year. Her work for Standard Chartered on a series of mandates, including its primary listing in India, the first by an overseas issuer in India, and its £3.3bn rights issue, was particularly impressive and helped win Slaughters our Corporate Team of the Year award.
Steve Williams
Unilever
Steve Williams stood down as the general counsel of Unilever in 2010 after a long career in which he not only managed the legal function during a transformational period for the company but also, more generally, raised the profile of the in-house lawyer. After qualifying at Slaughter and May, Williams moved in-house with ICI in 1975 before joining Unilever in 1986 and becoming the company’s GC in 1993. As well as his time at Unilever, Williams has taken on a number of non-executive directorships, proving that lawyers can play an important role in the boardroom.
