Energy and Natural Resources Team of the Year
SIMMONS & SIMMONS - Richard Dyton
Simmons & Simmons took lead role acting for MVV Umwelt on an energy-from-waste project that will see the German waste management company build a facility on Ministry of Defence (MOD) owned land. The team advised on the corporate financing; the subcontracts required for the facility; all of the regulatory issues surrounding electricity off-take arrangements; and the heat supply agreements with the MOD.
The winning team must demonstrate real strength and commitment in the energy and natural resources sector. Although we will be accepting submissions covering corporate and finance matters, as well as contentious work, it is not the size of the deal that counts but the industry knowledge behind it. The winner will have advised on a trailblazing matter that has significantly affected the market.

ASHURST
David Wadham
Ashurst advised seven mandated lead arrangers and a handful of export credit agencies on the $1.4bn funding for the Shuweihat S3 independent power project in Abu Dhabi. The funding facility comprised $1.1bn of long-term facilities and $280m of equity bridge facilities, put together by a dedicated team of three partners.

Acting for the National Development Corporation of Tanzania (NDC), DLA Piper helped secure a $3bn investment from Sichuan Hongda to develop a coal mine and power project, and an iron ore mine and smelter project located in southern Tanzania. The deal saw China’s Sichuan enter into a joint venture with NDC to develop the projects and provide the funding.
NORTON ROSE
Charles Whitney
Norton Rose gathered a cross-border team to advise a consortium of six sponsors of a large gas-fired power project in the Sultanate of Oman. WHITE & CASE
Jason Kerr
This US firm took lead role acting for the lenders on the $1bn merchant power project in Turkey, which is expected to generate 800MW. The successful funding structure for this deal was particularly signifi cant due to the continued liberalisation of the Turkish gas and electric markets, meaning careful and creative collaboration between lender and sponsor was crucial in getting the deal through.
ZYDA LAW
Paul Zyda
Acting for EDF Energy, this Nantwich-based boutique successfully obtained a section 36 approval from the Department of Energy and Climate Control and secured planning permission for the construction and operation of a dry fuel store at the Sizewell B nuclear power station.
